23.5 PAST MISTAKE
1.    Because he stole jewels from a house and the police caught.
2.    Mistake:
a.    Spent free days watching the house.
b.    used his own car.
c.    Didn't wear mask.
d.    Didn't wear gloves.
e.    Hid the jewels in his house.
Result:
a.    Neighbors got suspicious.
b.    Police got the number.
c.    Police recognized him.
d.    left finger prints in the house.
e.    Police found them.
3.    He shouldn't have spent three days watching the house. He shouldn't have used his own car. He should have worn a mask He should have worn gloves. He shouldn't have hidden the jewels in his house.
4.    If he hadn't spent three days watching the house, the neighbors wouldn't have got suspicious. If he hadn't used his own car, the police wouldn’t have got his number. If he had worn a mask, the police wouldn’t recognized him. If he had worn gloves, he wouldn’t have left his fingerprints in the house. If he hadn't hidden jewels in his house, the police wouldn't have found them.
5.     
a.    The detective shouldn't have joined the police force.
b.    He should have taken up burglary.

6.    He shouldn't have boasted about the robbery in the pub. If he hadn't boasted it, the landlord wouldn't have contacted the police. He shouldn't have straight gone after the robbery. If he hadn't gone straight home after the robbery, he wouldn't have been arrested. He should have waited until dark. If he had waited until dark, the police wouldn't have recognized him. He should have sold the jewels. If he had sold the jewels, the police wouldn't have found them in his house. He shouldn't have become a burglar.  If he hadn't become a burglar, he would have become a respected person in the society.
23.6 EVENTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES
1.     
a.    He hit the man.
b.    He should have been concentrating on his driving.
c.    If he had been concentrating on his driving, he wouldn't have hit the man.
2.     
a.    Linda's fiancé got angry.
b.    She shouldn't have been kissing, the electrician, her fiancé wouldn’t have got angry.
c.    If he hadn't been kissing the electrician, her fiancé wouldn't have got angry.
3.     
a.    The room caught a fire.
b.    He shouldn't have been smoking in bed, the room wouldn’t have caught a fire.

4.     
a.    The baby swallowed a worm.
b.    Agnes should have been watching the baby.
c.    If she had been watching the baby, it wouldn't have swallowed a worm.
5.     
a.    Phil didn’t know that there was a fire.  
b.    He shouldn't have been wearing his headphones.
c.    If he hadn’t been wearing his headphones, he would have known that there was a fire.

23. 7 CARNIVAL
1.      Once a year.
2.      Because they didn't like the carnival / because they thought it would lead to violence.
3.      An extreme right-wing political group. One of policies is to keep black immigrants out of Britain.

a.    Singing, dancing music, street parades, people selling things.
b.    A confrontation between a West Indian and two National Front members in a café.

a.    They moved into street where the cafe was, lined the streets, kept the National front away, fought with
youths, arrested more than 50 people.
b.    They threw bottles, broke shop windows, fought with police.
c.    They held a noisy demonstration in a nearby street.
6.     
Police Spokesman: thinks police presence and action were necessary.
Carnival Organizer: thinks police are mainly to blame for the violence became they overreacted.
National Front Spokesman: thinks the blacks are to blame for the violence not the National Front, and that the Carnival should have been banned.
Local Resident: thinks the National Front started the trouble, and youths from outside the area joined in; thinks local people, black white, aren’t to blame.
