Past and Present
I remember, I remember
The house where I was born,
The little window where the sun
Came peeping in at morn;
He never came a wink too soon
Nor brought too long a day;
But now, I often wish the night
Had borne my breath away.

I remember, I remember
The roses, red and white,
The violets, and the lily-cups-
Those flowers made of light!
The lilacs where the robin built,
And where my brother set
The laburnum on his birthday, -
The tree is living yet!
I remember, I remember
Where I was used to swing,
And thought the air must rush as fresh
To swallows on the wing;
My spirit few in feathers then
That is so heavy now,
And summer pools could hardly cool
The fever on my brow.
I remember, I remember
The fir trees dark and high;
I used to think their slender tops
Were close against the sky:
It was a childish ignorance,
But now ’tis little joy
To know I’m farther off from Heaven
Than when I was a boy.
-       Thomas Hood

I entered the building, and as instructed by the curator, I bought a ticket and hired a special hand machine that will play the recorded voice to explain to me everything in English. As I passed the administrative building, I came across a beautiful garden; it was full of pointed shapes of fir and pine trees, giving the best proof of French topiary. Far away stood other trees like walnut, juniper and yew, birds chirruped from the top. Among the topiary art stood a huge black bust, on top of which lay a drooping figure of Rodin. Not Rodin himself but a magnificent sculpture of him. It is commonly known as Rodin’s Thinking Man. The Thinking Man squatted on a large and tall marble slab, in half bent posture and pensive mood. This is one of the masterpieces in modern art, an incomparable work. Rodin’s pensive mood is remarkable.

Three years ago I had visited a smaller museum in Baltimore; Sewa had joined me from Illinois. In that very small museum, Rodin’s copy too was quite small. Rodin’s little thinker in Baltimore was a black metal work, just a replica. I remember writing an article which reminds us of our visit to Baltimore, and Van Gogh’s Irises. It got published in Antarderisti edited by Jyoti Ghimire of the USA.

If you grew up in Bouddha in the 90s or early 2000s, you probably ate at Mechung restaurant. For many years, the restaurant, located a stone's throw from Bouddha Stupa's main gate, was the go- to- place for thukpas and momos.

The restaurant wasn't the cleanest nor was it the most pleasant- looking but it was beloved. The service was quick, the momos always served on steel plates with a complimentary bowl of bone broth, and thukpas almost always arrived minutes after ordering. You'd bump into your neighbours, relatives and friends, hungrily chomping away at juicy crescent-shaped momos and slurping down long strands of white noodles.

How Mechung got its name is a story of its own. The word, which means a short person, was coined by the locals who dined there because the restaurant had a server who was shorter than four feet. “He was efficient, remembered the orders by heart, and a regular at the importantly, was an entertaining character,” a regular at the restaurant said recalling her years' eat there.

After serving hundreds of thousands of plates of momos and thukpas, the restaurant closed down. In 2018, Mechung reopened in the exact spot-where it initially was. Wanting to discover what this old haunt had to offer, I walked into restaurant on a recent Sunday evening. The current livery of Mechung is fancier than what it once was. It is spread across two floors; there's a floating wooden staircase, tiled floors, and comfortable cushioned chairs except for the name, the place is devoid of any trace of its past, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

The first thing to order is, of course, a plate of buff momo and a bowl of buff thukpa. The momos take more than a few minutes to arrive, and I tell myself that the is now operating in a wildly different world- maybe it has decided to do away with its lightning-quick service.
