Lesson: 6

Political Parties

  • Political parties are the organized groups of people bound with the common view of political ideology, philosophy and programmes.

  • Political parties in democracy are invisible government. Democracy cannot be imagined in the absence of political parties.

  • In democracy the party which wins the election forms government and others remains as opposition and watchdog the activities of government for the promotion of national interest. They play the role of bridge between citizens and government.

  • Nepal has adapted the multiparty democratic system. The part 29 of the constitution says political parties cannot be banned in Nepal.

  • The political party aims that to discriminate Nepali citizens on the ground of religion, caste, creed, language and sex cannot get recognition from the Election Commission.

The Criteria to Open Political Parties

  • The code of the political party should be democratic.

  • There should be the periodic election system for the different posts of office bearers at least once in five years.

  • System of inclusive participation in different executive committees

The Criteria to Open Political Parties

  • Name of the political party and address of its head office

  • Name of the members of executive committee of the political party

  • Source of the income of that political party

Role of Political Parties

  • Protection and promotion of national integrity and sovereignty through public support

  • Performing as a bridge between government and citizens

  • Establishment and strengthening of democracy

  • Protection and promotion of human rights and social justice

  • Involvement in the activitieie of public welfare

  • Creation of public awareness against social problems and evils

  • Facilitation in the development and construction

  • Maintaining good governance

Role of Political Parties in the Establishment of Democracy

  • Praja Parisadh, the first political party of Nepal was formed to the raise organized voice against the autocratic ruling system of Rana.

  • In 2007, during Anti Rana movement, the political parties, especially Nepali congress played a great role.

  • The first election of Nepal 2015 BS only became possible because of the role of political parties.

  • They revolted against the government from the beginning in different forms as a result in 2047 and democracy was re-established in Nepal.

  • Likewise, the mass movement II (Mass Revolution II) also came to an end with the result of Republic Nepal with the significant role of Political parties.

  • They have not only brought change in political system, the roles of political parties are more significant to guarantee the rights of the people and role to implement democratic values in the country.

Why are political parties not so much popular among the people?

  • The political parties of the country are not so much concerned about the fulfillment of common wish of the people.

  • They give more priority to the political cadres.

  • The political parties, in democracy, take priority over nepotism and favoritism.

  • Nepali politics always lacks the good leader to win the heart of people and stable democratic system in the country.

  • The parties which form the government misuse the power and only fulfill their wishes, and the party remaining in opposition always conducts conspiracy to get the power.

  • Political parties use people as a ladder to gain their political height. After getting the position they forget the people.

  • They could not solve the problem of regional disparity and imbalance in relation to development.

  • The social problems and evils are promoted rather than having them eliminated.

  • Political parties and leaders, rather than giving a priority to solve the problems of the country, split and play the game of power.
