Abduction of Democracy and Ban on Political Parties

The coup of 2017 BS

After the general election of 2015, a government was formed on the Premiership of BP Koirala. People cast their vote to choose their government for the first time. But King Mahendra did not like the popularity of B.P. Koirala. He wanted to rule by himself as he was very ambitious. So, using Article no: 55 of The Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal, 2015, he dismissed the elected government, suspended parliament and imprisoned the Prime Minister on 1st Paush, 2017 BS. Arresting ministers, political activists, and leaders he took the sole power in his hand. He banned the political parties blaming that the misery, sorrow and obstacles of people remained unchanged, government was unable to solve the problems of the people and failed to maintain law and order, national unity and the sovereignty of the country were in danger, corruption increased, the leaders were more interested for party and personal matters rather than national matters and international relation destroyed. This act of King Mahendra is called the coup of 2017 BS.

Socio-economic Achievement from 2007 to 2017

Though the period of 2007 to 2017 BS was full of political instability and tremulous, many important changes took place in the country. Democratic system was introduced. Literacy was about 2% before the establishment of democracy but increased during this period.

Social achievements

  1. All the forests were nationalized.
  2. Civil Service Act was implemented in 2013 BS.
  3. Common people were also privileged to go to schools and colleges. English Medium Schools were established throughout the country.
  4. Construction of highways started for the development of transportation.
  5. Domestic and International air service began.
  6. Election of Kathmandu Municipality was held.
  7. Establishment of friendly relationship with the neighboring and other countries was established.
  8. Hetauda-Kathmandu ropeway was extended.
  9. Koshi and Gandak Agreements were signed on 12th Baishakh, 2011 BS and on 19th Mangsir, 2016 BS respectively.
  10. Nepal became the member of United Nations Organization in 2012BS (14 the December, 1955).
  11. Nepal Cultural Council was established for the strengthening of culture.
  12. Nepal got the membership of Universal Postal Union on 26th Aswin, 2013 BS.
  13. Radio Nepal was founded on 20th Chaitra 2007 BS.
  14. Supreme Court was established. Independent and impartial judicial system started.
  15. Telephone and Telegram services began in the country.
  16. Tribhuwan University was established in 2016 BS. Similarly, Law College was also established in Kathmandu.

Economic achievements

  1. A declaration regarding the land was issued on 17th Bhadra, 2013 BS that made the provision of tenant’s right.
  2. Annual budget was presented and published for the first time in Nepal.
  3. Birta Abolition Act was enforced in Poush, 2016 BS.
  4. Five years’ Plan was declared on 22nd Aswin, 2012 and implemented from 2013 BS.
  5. It started planned development in Nepal.
  6. Modernization in agriculture and trade diversification began in the country.
  7. Nepal Rastra Bank was established on 14th Baishakh, 2013 BS.
  8. New tax system was implemented.
  9. Uniformity was brought in the use of money.
