Critical thinking
a. Do you think that the title “Foresters without Diplomas” is suitable to the essay? How?
The title “Foresters without Diplomas” is suitable to the essay. The entire essay revolves around the efforts made by the women in Kenya to make The Green Belt Movement successful.
The essayist and her team first called the foresters to come and show the women how they planted trees. The foresters proved to be very problematical because they had diplomas. They had difficult methods of dealing with a very simple thing like looking for seeds and planting trees. Finally, the essayist and her team taught the women to do the thing using common sense and they did. They were able to look for seeds in the neighborhood, and learn to recognize seedlings as they germinated when seeds fell on the ground. Women did not have to wait for anybody to grow trees. They have been teaching each other. They are really foresters without a diploma.
b. Can a person make a difference in a society? Discuss with an example from a person who has made a difference in your society.
It is not the fact and easy to take on the idea like “I am the person who can make a difference in a society”. But the truth is that it is quite difficult, but not impossible. If we all places our struggles to make a society better, we can achieve greater things. Making the society better not only involves fixing the right rules but also includes society’s kindness, generosity, social work, and responsibilities. The person who is concerned about others more than personal benefits can have an impact on them. Here is an example of a kind and generous person.
Dr. Ramesh Thapa is my neighbor. He works in a government hospital. He is counted as one of the best surgeons in the city. Every three months he runs a mobile clinic campaign in the different parts of our district, who can’t afford the expensive treatment. In addition to this, he manages free medical treatment for 4 persons who are suffering from chronic diseases. He has saved the lives of several people. His family members also support him unconditionally.
He is modest and simple. For him humanity comes first. Different organizations have honored him for his pious contribution to the society. We really feel proud of him.
Writing
C. Write an essay on 'The Community Forest in Nepal'.
(This essay is only for a hint. )
The Community Forest in Nepal
Community forestry program is a successful participatory approach for forest conservation and management in Nepal. This program gives authority to the community to manage forest resources. Studies have shown that potential benefits the community forestry will generate are in preventing environmental degradation and utilizing forests resources.
The approach of community forestry allows the user groups for decision making abilities within the community regarding forests products. Resources within the forests are used by the locals to generate income by selling them. The program encourages the community development activities that has a direct effect on lower income households. The development activities help them generate daily incomes for their livelihood.
Community forestry has a great role in biodiversity conservation in Nepal. The condition of forests has improved after handing over forests to the locals. The trees grown in barren land minimize the natural disasters like landslides, soil erosions, etc. Biomass, carbon stock and soil organic carbon have increased due to the community forestry management. This approach creates and enhances wildlife habitat and water quality. There is increase in the number of wild animals and birds.
Nepal now stands one of the leaders in community- based forest management. This program has made direct progress in preventing environmental degradation, and to some extent uplifts the economic condition of marginalized people in the community. To make the program more successful and popular, conservation and utilization of the forests should be social binding and blending with technical aspects.
